Youth Action towards protecting the future of our planet. MakerEd Challenge.

In today's alway’s on and hyper stimulation through constant adverts and promotions, everyone is exposed to promotion of unbridled consumption as the key to happy and fulfilling lives. The youths are however more vulnerable due to the evolving character.

In reality, the impacts of this unsustainable consumption are extremely harmful, contributing to climate change and other environmental challenges, such as rising sea levels, water shortages and food insecurity.

The world’s youth will have a significant role to play if we are to bring about the widespread behavioural change needed to shift towards more sustainable lifestyles and consumption habits. It is important for young people to understand that behind the everyday choices and over-consumption lies increased exploitation of resources which will worsen with climate change and eventually will minimize their opportunities for a better and sustainable future.

While many young people have already heard about climate change, the majority of them still perceive it as an abstract threat, too complex and too big while in fact its consequences are concrete, like the solutions and behaviours that can be developed to adapt to or mitigate them.

Climate action is the 13 goal of the sustainable development goals while educating and engaging the youth to take action is att the center stage of actions.

You might think that they are too young to know about the risks and realities of climate change. No is spared from its effects.

This challenge proposes a makerEd activities that educates youth aged 15 -15 years to action. Details are as seen below.

To begin, form a group of 3–4 learner. You will carry out activities aimed at introducing you to climate change, its effect and how your choices might have an impact.

Familiarize

Observation

Identify and interprete the NASA’s images of change in the vital sign of the planet

Discernment:

Match and give examples human actions and effect on climate change following the review top 10 man made activities that contribute to climate change

Association

Design a solution (action or steps) to address the identified root course for any of the activities learners might also be involved in which contributes to climate change.

What is the the top man man contribution? In what way did you contribute in the past? Why is the activities significantly impacting climate change? How can it be reduces (step to educate and prevent)?

Co-Create

Capture in field/ lab

For the selected man made action contributing to climate change, take a real life (eg deforestation, wast disposal or CO2 from cars and industries). Alternatively, if it is impossible to take a field picture of selected activity, find a closely related photo online. .

3D model mounting

Create 3d object of the designed solution. The superimposed avatar that provides details

Watch a video of UniteAR app and import of the user image (from field or online search) and 3d object

Design a banner describing in clear details how the activity to explore climate change works.

Exibit

Audience assessment and affective response.

Setup a demo or exhibition in the form of a tour, where participant can explore various presentation independently or with the help of a guide/ presenter.

The banner alongside printed 3D images of all the solution to design posted in the corners of a hall/ room.

Response measurement

Design questionnaire and collect feedback on

reaction: what did the participant think of the training they received? Did they find it useful?

learning: If learning and a change in behaviour occurred
